Marcel, the protagonist of the film, is continuously searching for a hidden part of his identity. Marcello, the subconscious of Marcel, is in many ways his polar opposite. He's social, audacious, and influential. The two meet for the first time when Marcel unplugs the antennas of his old television. Marcello offers the wake-up call that Marcel has been waiting for his whole life.
